Learn

A turtle's journey begins about 60 days before each release. Every night female turtles will leave the ocean to find the perfect spot to nest. After digging a hole in the sand they will lay up to 100 eggs! They then cover thier eggs and return to the ocean.

That's when San Pancho Turtles jumps into action! Every night they patrol the San Pancho playa looking for nests. Due to natural predators as well as poachers it is critical for them to find the nests as quickly as possible.

When they find a nest they will dig it up, record the number of eggs in the nest, and then transport the eggs to their secure nesting ground near the Tierra Tropical Beach Club.

45-65 days later the turtles hatch! After helping them out of their nests, the volunteers at San Pancho Turtles give the turtles time in a safe space to get some oxygen and prepare for their big journey.

Volunteers then smooth the sand creating a runway to the ocean. Just before sunset the turtles are released to begin their grand adventure!

Fun fact! The sex of the turtle is largely determined by temperature. That means females are born in the summer and males in the winter!
